Non-Vibrating Sex Toys: An Overview

Not everyone loves vibrators. In fact, vibrations are very much a turn-off for some people, who might experience them as:

  • Numbing
  • Irritating
  • Distractingly buzzy
  • Uncomfortable

Fortunately, there are endless ways in which to masturbate, and plenty of toys that provide stimulation without vibration. Here are some of them.

If you don’t like vibrations, the simplest option for self-stimulation is a toy with no mechanical parts. For women, this could be:

Meanwhile, male-bodied peeps could try:

All of these toys are essentially just conveniently-shaped lumps of silicone, steel or glass – designed to be just the right shape for you to either stick your dick into them, or stick them into your body. They require no batteries, and have no complex moving parts. They’re durable, simple, and extremely quiet.

Your enjoyment of almost all of these, of course, will be enhanced greatly by the addition of an appropriate compatible lube. Here’s a detailed guide to lube, but the basic takeaway is: get a water-based lube (like this one), which is compatible with everything.

Air pressure + suction toys

Recently, sex toy manufacturers have been coming up with a range of toys that use either suction or waves of air pressure (or a combination of the two) to provide stimulation,

Most of these toys provide a sensation that’s relatively similar to vibration, but is generally reported to be less “buzzy”, less sharp, and less targeted.

One of the all-round best manufacturers of air pressure/suction toys is Womanizer, who have a pretty comprehensive range of toys, from this deluxe rechargeable smart stimulator down to this simple, compact travel toy.

Lovehoney also have their own range of air pressure/suction toys, which are simple, inexpensive, and well-made. If you’re not sure you’ll like the sensation but want to give it a try, their Clitoral Suction Stimulator is a good way to go.

Alternatively, their Indulge G-Spot and Clitoral Suction Stimulator is a good choice if you want a toy that can be used penetratively as well.

Liquid stimulants

You don’t have to rely purely on mechanical stimulation to get yourself off – there are plenty of topical substances that can create pleasing sensations. Interesting things to try include:

The application of these tingling, warming, relaxing substances won’t necessarily be sufficient to get you off without further stimulation… but they combine well with toys, touching and other masturbatory activities.

Often the stimulation provided by lubes and other liquids can help you relax enough to enjoy other toys to their fullest.

Penis/pussy pumps

Pumps are designed to glom into place on your genitals, creating an air-tight seal. By pumping air out, they create suction. Often this suction is used as a way to engorge the genitals or encourage an erection, but a lot of people also find it a pleasant sensation in and of itself.

I’d recommend this penis pump or this pussy pump from Lovehoney for a first time user.

Not many people find the stimulation of a pump pleasing enough to actually make them come, but using a pump may increase sensitivity, and bring about some interesting, stimulating and arousing sensations.

Oral sex simulators

Important to say up front: most things that are billed as oral sex simulators come nowhere close to mimicking the actual sensation of oral sex. But that’s fine – the sensations they do create are interesting and pleasurable.

The Sqweel was one of the first toys to try and emulate oral sex. It’s a wheel covered in little tongue-like paddles, powered by a small motor. Slather it with lube, apply to your genitals and let the tongues lap at whatever sensitive part of you they can reach.

There’s also the Zumio Rechargeable Deep Stimulation SpiroTIP Clitoral Stimulator, which features a hard tip that moves in a swirling pattern that (sort of) mimics a teasing finger. The sensation it provides is very close to vibration, but different enough that it warrants inclusion here.

Other oral sex simulators use a spinning or swirling component underneath a layer of silicone to simulate the feel of a tongue against your genitals. The Ora 3 Rechargeable Luxury Clitoral Pleasure Stimulator from Lelo is a pretty good example of this type of toy.

Needless to say, all of these toys are much improved by the addition of lube. Here’s a detailed guide to lube, but the basic takeaway is: get a water-based lube (like this one), which plays nicely with everything.

Electro toys

I’m a big advocate of electrical toys. While some people associate electricity only with pain, they can also be used to stimulate your body in a way that’s thoroughly pleasurable.

One of the most basic electrical toys you’ll find is a TENS machine (this is a good basic one to get started with). These are so benign you can pick them up in many ordinary high street pharmacies. They’re relatively safe… so long as you’re fit and well, don’t have a heart condition, and read and adhere to the instructions which come with the TENS machine you purchase.

Some people find the sensation provided by a TENS machine tickly or slightly painful. Some people find it pleasurable. And for some people it varies depending on the intensity and power level.

If you find that you do like the sensation, it’s worth investing in a more complex and comprehensive electrical rig (I recommend this Sensavox Power Unit from ElectraStim). Dedicated boxes like these can be used with a variety of attachments and insertables, like these snug-looking cock rings, or this knobbly (and very conductive) metal dildo.

Thrusting toys

Finally, there are thrusting toys – toys which provide stimulation not by vibrating, but by mimicking a thrusting motion.

At the top end of this category you have full-sized mechanical sex machines: powerful devices which usually consist of a dildo attached to a piston. These are expensive, intimidating, bulky, and more powerful than most people actually need (although there are inflatable models which are a little more accessible).

If a fucking machine is a bit much for you, you can invest instead in a much cheaper handheld thrusting dildo (like this one from Lovehoney). These are generally way more compact, inexpensive and unobtrusive than a full-size fucking machine.
