A Guide to Air Pressure/Suction Sex Toys

Air pressure sex toys are a relatively new thing. They’re sex toys that provide stimulation using pulses of air pressure or pulses of suction rather than vibrations.

Some people love air pressure toys, and effuse about their orgasmic effect. For other people air pressure toys aren’t world-changing, but are certainly something novel and fun to try. Plus they’re a great option if, for any reason, you don’t like the feeling of vibrations.

Here’s a quick overview of air pressure and suction toys.

Why do people enjoy air pressure toys?

There are lots of reasons why people enjoy playing with air pressure sex toys. Here are a few of them:

Air pressure toys provide new and pleasant sensations

Some people report that the stimulation provided by air pressure toys is more enjoyable than the stimulation from vibrators. Reports vary. Here are some things people have said about air pressure toys:

  • Fuller, deeper orgasms
  • Lighter, milder orgasms
  • More targeted stimulation of the clit than a vibrator
  • Less targeted stimulation than a vibrator
  • Triggers an extremely rapid orgasm
  • Leads to an orgasm that’s almost too quick
  • A subtler sensation than a vibrator
  • A more pronounced sensation than a vibrator

Basically we can surmise that air pressure toys feel different from vibrators and other sex toys, and that for a lot of people this difference is a positive one. For some people it’s even the key to having an orgasm, having a different kind of orgasm, or enjoying self-stimulation at all.

For that reason alone, it’s worth giving air pressure toys a try. Even if you’ve got an established masturbatory routine, air pressure toys allow you to mix things up a little.

Air pressure toys are quiet

Generally speaking, air pressure toys are a quieter than vibrators. It’s not a massive difference, but if you’re self-conscious about the noise that your toys make, an air pressure toy might represent a more discrete option.

You can enjoy air pressure toys for longer

Some people note that, because air pressure toys don’t directly make contact with the most sensitive parts of their genitals (and, instead, stimulate them with waves of air) they’re not as overstimulating as vibrators.

If you find vibrators a bit too intense to really enjoy, an air pressure toy might be a good way to go. Similarly, air pressure toys might allow you to masturbate for longer if you tend to feel too sensitive once you’ve been playing for a while.

How do air pressure toys work?

Most air pressure toys work in roughly the same way. They’re designed to be used on the clit (although you can position them wherever feels good to you). For this purpose they generally have a soft “hood” that fits snugly over the clit and isolates it in its own little rubbery cave.

Then, using a small pump or membrane, pulses of air pressure are applied – most toys vary between light suction and light overpressure in order to provide rapid waves of stimulation.

As well as stimulating the clit, this also draws blood to the area and increases sensation and feelings of pleasure, so the sensation will often change the longer you use the toy.

Do air pressure toys hurt?

Probably not. But it depends how you use them. Almost any toy can be painful if you use it wrongly enough. The sensation created by air pressure toys is different than what you might be used to, so expect it to feel a little weird at first.

If you start on a low setting and spend time getting used to the way it feels, it shouldn’t hurt. You can also use a small amount of your favourite water-based lube to ensure that you get a good seal with the toy, and make it more pleasant to the touch.

As with any toy, there’s no guarantee that you’ll love the sensation, but it definitely shouldn’t be painful.

Here are some of the best air pressure/suction toys available at the moment.

This toy is also quite compact and discreet, making it good for travel. Indeed, it even comes with a travel lock feature to ensure that it won’t accidentally switch on while in your suitcase.

Cleaning air pressure toys

Air pressure toys can be a little tricky to clean. Often they have an opening or membrane where the waves of air pressure are generated, meaning that they can’t simply be rinsed off or wiped down in the same way as other sex toys (more about cleaning other sex toys here).

For this reason, your air pressure toy is something that you shouldn’t share with other people. Once you’ve used it, it’s yours for life.

After each use, a quick clean with soap and water is a good idea (avoid getting water into the opening/membrane). Some toys have a silicone hood that pops off so that you can clean the bit that touches your genitals more thoroughly. Allow to dry for a day or two and then put away in a clean, dry drawer – preferably inside an individual bag or box.

If the membrane/opening of the toy goes get wet or dirty for any reason, you can gently clean and dry it using a q-tip or cotton swab.
